The forecasters have predicted a heatwave over the next 3 months. Yippee! That's great if you like the heat but what if you're heavily pregnant or have a young baby to look after? Not so great then huh?
Here are a few tips to help you stay as cool as possible:
Wear loose-fitting, breathable clothes such as cotton or linen.
Sit in a well ventilated room or have a fan on if you can.
Suck ice cubes.
Drink plenty of fluids.
If you have to go out, cover up and wear a hat to avoid sun burn and heat stroke.
Use a high factor sun tan lotion and wear sunglasses.
Take a bottle of water with you wherever you go.
Exercise or do your housework, etc at the start of the day before it gets too hot.
If you exercise make sure you stay well hydrated and don't overdo it. Listen to your body.
And for baby:
Keep them out of the sun! You can use a proper sun shade or even improvise with a muslin.
Make sure they drink plenty of milk (you can also give them water but check with your health adviser first).
Loose-fitting, breathable clothing is better when outside.
Strip them down to a nappy and vest when indoors.
Have a fan on in the room they are in but don't leave them in the draught.
Monitor their temperature regularly to ensure they are not too hot or cold and adjust clothing/bedding/ventilation accordingly.
I hope these few pointers help you to chill out in the heat. Enjoy it while it lasts by all means but above all be safe!
