Getting fit used to be a simple choice between do it yourself, follow a video or go to a gym. Now there’s a whole new world of virtual reality out there and the fitness industry is no exception. We all know about sports and fitness training through the various gaming platforms, phone apps, online videos and of course YouTube. Some gyms are even starting to run virtual classes where they have a virtual (video) instructor so they can open 24/7 and allow night owls to attend classes at 3am in the morning!
At Mum plus One I’m trying to reach a happy medium between these two worlds. I appreciate that clients want to workout when, where and how they like but that they still want to interact with a human rather than a video. It’s a delicate balance of reality vs virtual reality.
My virtual fitness training scheme allows clients to follow a bespoke exercise plan, designed around their likes and wants, but with my professional support, motivation and regular progress checks via phone, skype, email, text or facebook. I can demo exercises over skype and watch my client do them as if they were in a 1-2-1 session so they can be sure they are performing everything safely and effectively. I’m convinced that regular contact with me means they have someone real to be accountable to which helps to keep them on track to reach their goals.
I deliberately made the decision for my business to offer quality over quantity. I have chosen to interact personally with each of my clients and offer my time and skills to help them as needed during their exercise plans rather than just post videos onto my website for them to follow. I also purposely kept my fees low in order to make my plans accessible to more people. It was a no-brainer for me to offer a great service to fewer clients rather than offer a diluted experience to more. I believe in making people feel good about themselves and helping them to reach their goals. A big part of that for me is getting to know them as individuals and motivating them in the right ways.
The other benefit of my scheme is that plans can be designed for any length of time with any sensible activity included, which means my clients can even workout with their family and friends if they wish. I also offer the advantage of being able to change plans to keep things fresh and allow maximum progression on an ongoing basis rather than being stuck with a set DVD or online workout.
Mine certainly isn’t the most financially rewarding business model in the world but at least I can be proud of what I’m offering and know that I’m doing the best for my clients. After all, as a fitness instructor it’s my responsibility to ensure their safety and satisfaction as well as their health and happiness.
I am a fully qualified fitness instructor and exercise to music instructor who specialises in pre/postnatal exercise design so am able to take on clients (especially mums) from all walks of life across the UK.
